Sonja and Edwin are teaching Beginner Rock’n’Roll lessons during June and July. Lesson time is 7 to
8pm at the Top of the Cross, Canberra Southern Cross Club in Woden. Classes will be held on 25
June and 2, 9, and 16 July. After classes we’ll have music for practice/social dancing. To register or for
more information contact bookings@southsiderocknroll.com
Social dancing on Thursday nights is at the Top of the Cross, Southern Cross Club in Woden. This
venue has a great dance floor, and there are plenty of options for dining in the Club and nearby. If
there’s something special you want to dance to, let us know ahead of time or bring it on your phone.
Social dancing will begin at 8:15 on lesson nights. Entry remains at $5 per person and is included in
the lesson fee for those taking classes. Our lessons are being well attended at our fabulous new
venue. I would like to take this opportunity to invite our existing members to come along and meet
our new members and join in the fun at our Socials on Thursday nights.
Members have asked for something more advanced to learn once they have finished beginner
courses. Some of the Club’s more experienced dancers have kindly agreed to teach some
intermediate moves. On 7 May Adrian and Lindy taught a Rockabilly move, ‘The Swoop’ and on 11
June Michael and Barbara taught a Rock n Roll move, ‘The Bunny Hug’. Both these nights have been
very successful. Watch this space for more moves in the future. If any other members would like to
share their dancing expertise by demonstrating intermediate level moves for Rock’n’Roll or Rockabilly
dancing, please contact the Club.
We are hoping to run some Rockabilly lessons in the near future. Watch this space.
Our Annual General Meeting is being held on Thursday 24 September at 7pm, Top of the Cross,
Woden. You must be a current financial member to participate in the meeting or to nominate for
committee positions.
Membership renewals for the 2026/2027 financial year are now due. Due to increasing costs of
venues and bands, the membership is now $30 per person. You can renew your membership using
card or cash at any of our functions. Alternatively you can pay by bank transfer. If you pay by bank
transfer, please put your name(s) and the word membership in the details.
If you’re travelling, check out some of these rock’n’roll festivals around Australia. You’ll probably run
into other Southside members having a great time. These events are not organised by Southside
Rock’n’Roll. Unless otherwise noted, please contact the event organisers for more information. If you
know of any that should be added to the list, let us know.
For info check out the website and join their mailing list.
As previously advised in our newsletter, the Southside Rock ‘n’ Roll Club has arranged a group
attendance to the Wagga Rod & Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival in September. We have a confirmed table
booking for Friday and Saturday nights with 14 members attending. Unfortunately we have been
advised that the event is at full capacity and no further seats are available. We expect this will be a
fabulous weekend away.
The cranky crew are again hosting this fantastic Festival in November at Batemans Bay. Ticketed
events sell out very fast and we expect them to go on sale any day now. If you haven’t attended in
recent years, we highly recommend you consider adding this to your calendar.
